My former poetry teacher—Maria Mazziotti Gillan—sent emails praising my powerful poetics. The poet Martín Espada thanked me on Facebook for my courage, for my “strong voice!” But worst of all: the students were reading. I was becoming a campus celebrity. I had to be stopped.
